Wyoming Reads
On May 20, first graders from across Sheridan County gathered at the SCFPL to observe
the third annual Wyoming Reads,
sponsored by the Sue Jorgensen Library Foundation. School Districts 1 & 2 Superintendents Sue Belish and
Craig Dougherty presented a hard cover book to each student courtesy of the
Foundation. The Foundation was created
in 1996 to benefit libraries and advance the cause of childhood literacy in Wyoming: Casper Cares, Casper Reads was
born. From 1999 -2005 each Casper
first grader had the opportunity to select a book of their choice. In 2006 the program went state-wide and Wyoming Reads was born. Now first graders throughout Wyoming gather each May
to celebrate reading and receive their chosen book. John Jorgensen leads this extraordinary
effort to honor his late wife's commitment to children, literacy and books: "She believed that until someone can read, they can't really do anything else."
